The AER Youth Summer School 2007 focused upon the role of the regions and their young citizens in securing the sustainable development of Europe and the wider world.
In the last few years, the scale of global environmental decline has been unprecedented. Climate change and global warming are leading to an increase in flooding and forest fires in many European countries; temperatures are changing and droughts are becoming more common. Fossil fuels will not be able to meet our increased demand for energy for much longer and renewable sources of energy need to be produced on a much larger scale.
Most of the problems of environmental degradation need to be addressed at the regional level. Regions and the young people who live in them therefore have a key role to play in contributing towards sustainable development at the European level.
During the Youth Summer School, participants had the opportunity to learn how they can take practical steps to improve sustainable development in their regions. This was achieved through examining best practice case studies, exchanging experiences and learning about European policies and programmes in the environmental field.
The aim of the Training weekend was to integrate and mobilize the AER Youth Team! It was an excellent opportunity to bring the young representatives together and to teach them how to be more involved in the regional and European activities.
The weekend was the continuation of the AER General Assembly, which took place from 7th to 9th November in Udine, Italy. All Youth Team members participated actively in the Assembly and they had a chance to present their 2008 Working Programme to all AER Members. They met as well the President of the European Commission Barroso.
On 9th November, just after the General Assembly, the Youth Team Training Weekend started with the Youth Team meeting. During the meeting, the evaluation of the Mainstreaming Youth Initiative was discussed as well as the outcomes of the last AER Sub-Committee Meeting in Jamtland. On 10th November, all day, the Youth Members attended the workshops concerning their involvement into the European, regional and inter-AER activities.
